sanjay gupta. >> and this is cnn it's monday, may 6, right now on cnn this morning palestinians in eastern rafah order to evacuate ahead of what the israeli military says will be an anti-terror operation donald trump returning to court for his hush money trial after comparing the biden administration to nazi germany at a weekend fundraiser. >> and deadly flooding in tech it says hundreds rescue thousands more displaced and the rain may not be over yet all right. >> 5:00 a.m. here in washington alive. look at capitol hill on this monday morning good morning, everyone. i'm kasie hunt. happy monday. it's wonderful to have you with us. >> this developing story right now, the israeli military
2:02 am
ordering palestinians to evacuate eastern raffa with the idf dropping leaflets it's on the area warning. >> they're about to engage in a military operation targeting terror organizations in the area source on the ground in east rafah, telling cnn that people are terrified. and in a state of panic following the evacuation order, there are 1.2 million displaced palestinians sheltering in and around the city of rafah but the idf says this is a limited scale operation in just the eastern part of the city, joining me now is cnn's nic robertson, nick, good morning to you. what do we know about this so far? >> yeah, the idf is telling people from about 12 blocks and eastern raffa that they need to leave, they need to go to an expanded safe zone, which is closer to the mediterranean sea. the al-muwasi refugee camp. the idf says, i've expanded this up to the north towards deir al balah and two wards, the east as well in khan younis, these are towns, cities rather that the idf has already had major operations and so he's telling us it's telling would un estimates to be about
2:03 am
100,000 palestinian civilians living in that eastern part of uh, raffa to evacuate a move to this safer area, it's not clear how long they have or when this military operation will begin. but the idf is telling them in these leaflets, in these announcements that they need to move immediately. you when officials talking about this to cnn in the past our also say that the area that the people are being evacuated to just not have sufficient to water does not have sufficient food at least one of the border crossings in the south was closed sunday when hamas fired rockets at an idf position just over the border inside of israel, three idf soldiers were killed in that the israeli foreign minister's office has just put out a statement saying, well, from the foreign minister saying that the fact that hamas fired rockets yesterday from the area of raffa isn't indication that they serious about ceasefire talks. this does have all the hallmarks of a major military

operation that we've seen in the past, even when the ids it says it begins small. and these safe areas for civilians are often not safe. people have died in them before all right. >> are nic robertson for us this morning with our breaking nick, thanks very much. i really appreciate it and just in just a few hours, donald trump returns to court for the fourth week of his criminal hush money trial. >> that will be digging deeper into trump world, but it's still unclear who's gonna be telling as defying next, it could be trump's former fixer, michael cohen, although we could also see him later, could be former adviser kellyanne conway or is it adult film star stormy daniels, who of course is the one at the heart of all of this after she received cash to keep quiet about her liaison with trump ahead of the 26th teen election. >> over the weekend, the republican national committee held its annual retreat in palm beach. >> and according to three attendees at a mar-a-lago fundraiser, trump was raging, accusing the biden administration of running what he called. it gestapo
2:05 am
administration, recalling the nazis and claiming that the president is behind the four criminal trials that he is currently facing. joining me now is national political reporter from the hill, julia manchester. julia good morning to you this is some difficult language that the president is using here, here's how the white house responded, quote, instead of echoing the appalling rhetoric of fascists lunging with neo-nazis and fanning debunks conspiracy theories that have caused spray police officers their lives. president biden is bringing the american people together around shared democratic values and the rule of law. they're point is, he has, donald trump has had lunch with neo-nazis, with nick fuentes what is your view of? >> him using this language in especially as his trial is playing out well, it's not the first time he's used language like this. >> we know that donald trump has invoked nazi imagery in the past, making those comparisons look, this is very much red meat, two who is base whose at a fundraiser really trying to
2:06 am
get them riled up. but i think it also reflects a frustration right now that donald trump is facing you. he has been campaigning, but at the same time for the most part, he is stuck in a courtroom in new york city, and he's not able to essentially talk about the trial as much because of that gag order. so i think you're seeing this frustration really play out at fundraisers on the campaign trail. but at the end under the day, this is red-meat first base yes i mean, i feel like it kinda makes a bigger statement about where we are as a country. >> i mean, it used to be that i mean, what was the joke when the internet was first invented, right? if you're talking about hitler, you are definitely losing. the thread has been totally lost. >> i mean it, it does even this was also what james singer, the biden campaign spokesman, said, quoted underscores what we already knew that trump campaign is about him, his fury his revenge, his lies, and his retribution you mentioned his base, but for the general electorate, for the
2:07 am
independence and the few swing voters, it's still exists in this country. >> they do exist and they are ultimately going to side the election does this what does this do for those voters? i don't think it does much for that. those voters and that's what the trump campaign as to really keep an eye on when he goes and campaigns when he's talking about he needs to make sure he's talking about those kitchen table issues, like the economy crime, the situation at the southern border, and he has been doing that a little bit at even the trial before. he'll go in and rachel the economy, for example, even though it's not related to what he's directly doing. but this is going to be i think a task for them to keep him on message. but at the same time, one would argue that donald trump trump's main bombastic remarks like this in the past and even though it will get criticism from his critics and others, he still, for whatever reason has been able to survive that the other gem of a set of remarks over the weekend came from kristi
2:08 am
noem, south dakota governor because of course, the other sort of concurrent of stories swirling vip stakes, donald trump's viv stakes. >> she seems to have pretty much taken herself out of the running with what she had to say in her book about shooting her own dog. she went farther in an interview this weekend in saying that she thinks that commander president biden's dog, who has had a number of biting incidents with secret service agents should meet a similar fate as cricket, her dog. here's what kristi noem said. >> joe biden's dog has attacked 24 secret service people's or how many people is enough people to be attacked and dangerously hurt before you make a decision on a dog and he's not living at the white house. that's the question that the president should be held account not able to your saying you should be president should be accountable chairs. what is what is the number this whole story just makes me deeply sad. >> yeah. forget, yeah. what but it does seem clear to me based
2:09 am
on that interview that she does really believe this. >> she doesn't seem to why does why is she not walking things? >> why is she not walking this? but it's been so fascinating because she's found this publicity tour promoting her book and she's had so many operators trinities to walk this back, but she continues to de herself deeper and deeper into this hole to conventional wisdom sort of states that she's out of the running for vp, but for whatever reason, she's continued i'm going to do this. >> i don't know if she thinks this is something that donald trump are those around donald trump would maybe commend, but one thing i know is that americans love dogs. everyone loves dogs. so this, i mean, does no favors for her. i'm sort of flabbergasted why we're here to be honest. >> yeah. all right. julie manchester for us. thanks for getting us started. hurdle moment. in this israel. i appreciate it. all right. coming up next and annual shipment to israel suddenly held up by the biden administration mission without explanation, we'll dig into that plus house speaker mike

2:16 am
it's leaks, wouldn't you? >> the fact that president biden, america's express concern about a radon raffa when there are so many civilians there. and that is combined with the fact they filled aid is being allowed into gaza by the israelis. so could be a suggestion that you need to hold off on raffa whilst you sought out this pressure on civilian malnourishment suffering but all of this is also tied up with this effort to get to some sort of deal as well. i mean, is israel actually going to go into rapper or is it posturing? >> yeah. >> max, the other piece of news we heard over the weekend from the israelis was this question about al-jazeera and their ability to operate in israel. there were throwing them out of the country rating their offices. there was a statement from the un talking about a free and independent media saying it's central to ensuring transparency and accountability. now, even more so given tight restrictions on reporting from gaza, what is
2:17 am
the reaction been to the israeli decision to do this? >> john is in group saying it has to be overturned as soon as possible for similar arguments, it's important that country has a free press, particularly in war time. there is a long history of tension between israel and al jazeera al jazeera seen as aunty israeli in some quarters of israel, now is being seen as pro hamas. in some quarters of israel but a lot of defenders in international journalism say they have been impartial. what they have had is reported on the ground in gaza when many other news organizations haven't had them and of course that's tied with the fact that international news agencies aren't being allowed into gaza by israel. so it's whatever perspective you take, but on the face of it, it does seem alarming that a well-respected international network has been ousted from the israeli media. just on tv. i think as i understand it, because you'll still be able let's get it

2:31 am
she finished her testimony after a brief break after court on friday, trump tried to clear up the lie that he had told the day before, which was that his gag order prohibited prohibited him from testifying in the trial. >> just to the ganglion is not testify the gag order stops me from talking about people in responding when they say things about me, when people saying things about me, i'm glad to respond. so there's judge has taken away my constitutional right all right. join me now to discuss this form of january 6 investigative counsel marked as children marcus. >> good morning. thanks so much for being here. so this was pretty remarkable. it's kind of walk through friday quickly before we look ahead to what we're going to see this week because for anyone that is just tuning in after after the weekend, she started to cry fry at the start of cross-examinati on, but it seemed to be related to the end of her testimony
2:32 am
when the prosecutors were questioning her and how she had characterized at what donald trump was focused on talking about and doing in this time what did, what did she say there and how do you think her testimony is going to potentially impact the case? >> from the very beginning of prosecutors have said this is about the conspiracy to influence the election. and in a cover up. and i think by the end of her testimony, hope hicks know the she had provided evidence consistent about influencing the 2016 election if you go to the piece where she ended, it was actually about why out of new york times posted the article, but michael cohen i'm paying the hush money payments to stormy daniel's and hope hicks said that the former president's said that michael cohen was doing it to look out for him to protect the president. and we know that michael cohen went to pay them on a monday without the former president telling him to do so. and so she kind of almost show that he was lying to her in that moment. and i'm sure she became overwhelmed that's her former boss, someone that gave us our start in this industry. and so she probably at that at that
2:33 am
moment, i realized that she was providing evidence about the conspiracy and also about the fact that the president, former president is not necessarily someone who tells the truth all the time really before. but yeah, no, you're right. i mean it's it's hard to overstate. >> yes, she was his boss, but how close that they actually were. >> i mean, you couldn't cover donald trump in 2015 and 16 without seeing and speaking with and she was there for s1 to a subpoena. right? she wasn't there on our own freewill, so i'm sure there was a lot of emotions going on at that moment. >> so let's talk about what happens next here, because we're looking ahead to see who the prosecutors may put on the stand next it could be michael cohen, although it also sounds like it's possible he'll be the final witness in the trial that we'll have to see. but stormy daniels still has yet to take the stand. i mean, what do you expect? the next move to b from the prosecutors and why? >> i think it'll be a stormy daniels, michael cohen kinda combo that comes up soon. i don't think michael cohen will
2:34 am
be last because you don't i want to end on someone who's going to bruise the way he's gonna get bruised on cross-examination. so i think we're going to have stormy daniels, karen mcdougal, maybe someone inside the campaign and michael cohen talk about the fear see as well as start to start talking about the cover up. the fraudulent business records. and then i think we'll see at the end some from the trump organization are probably financial folks who can talk about how the records were made fraudulent or how they were falsified. but i don't think we're going to end on my local him because he is going to take a bruising and his cross-examination. but he can corroborate a lot of what david pecker, keith davidson, others have already said so it's kind of in a good place for him to testify soon because we've already heard a lot of the facts is going to talk about so let's talk then about what stormy daniels could offer on the stand. >> i mean, she obviously was fully understands from her perspective what happened between her and donald trump, how things played out with keith davidson, her bowyer how do you expect them to approach her and what's if you're if you're the defense if you're cross-examining stormy
2:35 am
daniel's, where are you pushing her? >> so i think what she shows is what she understood the contract or the hush money to be about, was it about? embarrassing donald trump, a family man, or stopping the story from coming out before the election and she can talk about what hurt, maybe not what our attorney told you. that's attorney-client privilege, but i'm sure she can talk about what she thought that this contract was about. look, if i'm the defense, i'm going to talk about i'm gonna push her on look, it would have been embarrassing for his family to find out about an affair. it would have been embarrassing for millennia for baron. >> yeah. >> i think you just make it all about trump, a family man get her to admit that. yeah, that would've been embarrassing for him to have these facts come out, but really and truly, the defense is kinda been tough on their on their cross-examinatio ns here because it's pretty overwhelming evidence that this was about the election, about having these stories not come out after the access hollywood tape, which is why the testimony from friday and planning and that tape live was so damning for the trump defense because there was a
2:36 am
panic within the campaign after the access hollywood tapes. and they did not want the stormy daniels story come out through that. and so it's kinda hard cross-examine someone on that fact the other thing we're waiting for is the gag order and when donald trump had said earlier, he said last week that the gag order was preventing him from testifying in the trial at all, which was not true. >> so there has been this question looming over like whether donald trump is going to take the stand in his own defense. we just want to show you here's the evolution of what he's had to say about that. watch i would have no problem testified. >> i didn't do anything wrong. i'm testifying. i tell the truth. i mean, all i can do is tell the truth and the truth is that there's no case they have no case. >> if it's necessary, right now. i don't know if you heard about today today, was just incredible. people are saying the experts, i'm talking about legal scholars and experts. they say, what kind of a cases

is there is no case. >> well, i'm not allowed to testify. i'm under a gag i can testify of course then he went on to say what we showed at the top, which is that it's not it's not actually about the gag order. you will testify or not. he's not going to testify. >> he's i mean, i guess there's you can never say never. i highly doubt it though. it would be a cross-examination that a prosecutor would dream of. the former president were to take the stand and i say that not being sarcastic, it's just that he has met so many public statements. he he has made so many tweets that you're able to just a cross examine what his state of mind was at the time that this conspiracy was going on after the conspiracy, his character for truthfulness. i mean, it could be days of cross-examination away that would be one of the more humiliating things for the former president. and so if i were the prosecution, i would try to bait him no way to try to testify. i would hope well, we would testify, but he's not testifying. >> all right. market shoulders for us, marcus. thank thank you. i really appreciate it. all right. we're gonna get
2:38 am
another dramatic showdown on capitol hill this week, we expect one anyway, as georgia congresswoman marjorie taylor greene has vowed to force a floor vote to try to remove the house speaker, mike johnson it's a move that democrats say won't work because they plan to help johnson but green plans to forge ahead. she does not. we should note have the blessing of donald trump i'm the biggest supporter of president trump and that's why i proudly wear this maga hat i fight for his agenda every single day, and that's why i'm fighting here against my own republican conference to fight harder against the democrats. >> all right, joining me now is capitol hill reporter from axios julia grace at braf key july grace. good morning. to you. thanks so much for being here. >> so why is she doing this? she's arguing that his handling of appropriations of fisa of ukraine funding without border or her big reason. sure. i mean, there's all officially plenty of policy reasons, but this is like a national stage political play. what's in it? i mean, there's gotta be something in it for her. >> there's just also a strong ally of kevin mccarthy. so i
2:39 am
think there's still some allegiance there, but i mean, i think she's definitely got some round that's from her entire conference right now. either there's a ton of people pushing back, including people within trump world who kind of feel like this is going to hinder their chances of picking up seats and could hurt him up the valid just he's got his trial going on. there's enough chaos we've seen. i mean, like an unprecedented amount of chaos in this congress. it's been, it's been a wild ride those far and they're kind of trying to look to project that they can legislate before november, which another motion to vacate and democrats will bail him out this time. but i mean, there's people who are saying if she keeps bringing these up, that they want concessions out of republicans and they want their bills on the floor. so how long they keep saving him as kind of a lingering question there, which is kind of a predicament. yeah, for sure. and the trump but let me dig into the triple question then i want to play a little bit of hakeem jeffries, but you say that there are people in trump world who don't want her to do this. what is your reporting say about other trump allies on the hill and how they're pressuring her. >> no. i mean, i've spoken to matt gaetz and he said that he
2:40 am
timed his motion to vacate, not in an election year. it you speak to the right presley eighth voted to oust mccarthy. they're and they're kind of in the same boat with the timing. there aren't a ton of legislative priorities. they're going to need to fund the government. but outside of what's likely going to be a cr, there's not a ton of major things left for them to do. where they just want to bring the fight to next year and try and figure out whether or not they keep him in place, which a lot of them are saying they don't want to pick a new candidates, challenge him for leader or right? >> so here's how hakeem jeffries has defended his decision are explained his decision around his conference agreeing to help get speaker johnson out of this jam watch in our view, what traditionally be let the other side work its own mess out but when that mess starts to impact the ability to do the job on behalf of the american people in a responsible thing at that moment might be for us to make clear that we will not allow the extremist that though the congress in the country into
2:41 am
chaos i mean, it isn't unusual decision for a party for the democrats to decide, okay, fine. we're going to save the republicans from their own mess. >> set that i've spoken to people in that orbit and they trust him more than they trust and mccarthy and they agreed with this decision to bring you crane funding to the floor. >> so right now, they feel like they kind of have a good working relationship with them despite maybe not disagree a disagreeing with a large portion of this policy decisions. now if they bail him out, i've talked to a lot of republicans sleep kind of feel like they lose some leverage in future negotiations, including appropriations. so it's kinda some i've talked to a lot of people to kinda feel like the freedom caucus members, they were pushing back against some are kind of undermining themselves and they really need rule changes next year to avoid some of this chaos. >> all right, julie grows braf gate for us this morning, julie grace, thank you. really appreciate it. all right. coming up next again. seven thriller means there won't be a repeat champion in the nhl plus democratic congresswoman debbie dingell is here and she'll join us live coming up next how

like a very brief thing that happened at the university of michigan. it was handled in a pretty straight forward manner. but this is is of course something that i know you have been very personally involved with talking about in your home state as it is an incredibly emotional issue, what is your view? you have? how colleges have the job that they have been doing handling this at places like columbia and ucla i think it's extremely difficult for every college campus and the effect emitter i talked to everybody a talk to the jewish students. >> i've talked to the pro-palestinian students and a pay a lot attention to the people that are coming in from the outside trying disturb people i think it i think many people feel like there's nothing that you're going to do that's going to be right freedom of speech does matter when does freedom of speech crossed the line? what do we do about the hate that we are seeing? just encouraged by people from the outside i'm

and trump does not accept it. what do you think the country is in store for? >> i'm very worried about this selection i've come from a time that we had confidence in. we need to have confidence in our government institutions. and we really look, i've worked for al gore, i chaired his campaign. i remember that election, but we accepted the election results in the consequences that went with it. we now have republican leaders saying, hey, we don't win, we're not going to accept it. what we saw in january 6 could just be a precursor to things that we could see around the country to remind people when i said people don't belong at the state capitol with assault one weapons, which they weren't michigan prior to january 6. i had min outside my home and street. so there were no private property with assault weapons. we need to worry about kind of authoritarian government that this country could be looking for if people are not willing to say, i trust the institutions, i believe it
