face of higher borrowing rates. cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger joins us from new york with the numbers. jill, good morning to you. so what were the april results? >> reporter: so as you said, a bit of a pull back. 175,000 jobs added. and added is the important part. we didn't lose jobs. but this is lower than let's say around 250,000 that we've seen over the last few months. and over the last year. i think what's important here is that you are going to hear oh, this was disappointment and it was a miss. but it's actually what the federal reserve wants. they want the job market to cool down just a little bit so that wage growth starts to cool. and then inflation cools. so i think the fed is going to be very happy with this. and by the way the unemployment rate held steady at 3.9%. we've been at 3.7 bank account to 3.9% for almost a year, not a lot of movement there. >> all right, you brought up the word inflation here. a lot of consumers concerned about it. which remains high. are
6:44 am
wages keeping up with these price increases? >> reporter: they actually are. you know, overall, wages were up 3.9% from a year ago. that's still ahead of the inflation rate. 3.5%. but again, if you are looking at this like what the fed really wants and what we're hoping for the economy, about inflation, we want wage growth to come down and for inflation to come down. it's almost like the fed would be happier if wages go up by say 3.5%. but inflation goes down below 3%. they'd be very happy with that outcome. >> jill, the federal reserve met this week. they decided to keep a benchmark interest rate at a 23 year high. was there any clue about when they may start cutting rates? >> reporter: you know, it's like -- everybody wants chairman powell to be like okay it's going to happen on this day. he's not going to say that. he keeps saying that inflation is higher than officials would like and even though that's the case they're very unlikely to raise interest

rates. they will probably start lowering rates later in the year. and again, if we keep seeing the job market slow down, and wage growth slow down, i think it is possible that we see inflation come down and then we're on track two have a few rate cuts by end of the year, for now right this second rates are high i get it and bad news for borrowers but hey savers take advantage of the high rates in the money market accounts or cds. because they will not be at this level for the entirety of the year, they will come down i think. >> all right, thank you jill. we appreciate it. and you can see jill regularly on "cbs mornings" and the cbs "evening news" with norah o'donnell. for more analysis go to jillonmoney.com. time now for a look at what's coming up later on "cbs mornings." jericka duncan joins us live from new york. good morning to you. >> good morning nicole. coming up on "cbs mornings," despite

fact the community of los gatos is trying something new because of this but there's always a counterpoint. residents aren't exactly thrilled and devin fehely went there to find out why. >> i'm more concerned about the height that's being proposed at seven stories, that's pretty tall and out of character for the town of los gatos. >> reporter: jeff fox says the high-rise apartment complex would tower over his house, and neighborhood, and offer a birdseye view directly into his backyard, leaving him no privacy whatsoever. >> i believe in more housing and i believe we should have more affordable housing, but i also believe we should try to preserve the character of our neighborhoods. >> reporter: fox has lived in the quiet los gatos neighborhood for 25 years and he and many of his neighbors are deeply concerned about the plans to build a seven story apartment complex on the backside of their homes. according to the application submitted to the town in march, the complex would have 238 apartments. 47 of which would be affordable. or 20%. >> i'm really concerned about

today near redwood city. more north we go the cooler it gets at least into san francisco. 66 today but let's take san jose as an example and i'm going to remove the map and show you this cold front that's moving in is definitely packing its punch with cooler weather. about 15-degree difference as we head into our setup tomorrow just into the santa clara valley. the big reason why of course is that huge rainstorm is on its way. going to impact a lot of us as we wake up early tomorrow morning and lasting in the afternoon hours too. so today aics mix of sun and clouds in the forecast for us. a little breezy in the coastline this afternoon and the clouds heavier in the overnight hours tonight. here's what's happening in the forecast tomorrow. that rain moves in just up into the north bay near santa rosa and into the 6:00 a.m. hour. continue to watch that sweep to the south. san francisco getting hit all throughout the morning commute or at least it's saturday so there's not too much of a commute. but out there on the roads take it slow because here we go down into the santa clara valley. lasting into the afternoon hours. we'll watch that moderate to heavy rain still fall in those local

communities. now that stretches all the way off into the east as we head into the afternoon and evening hours on saturday. bringing in snow to the sierra and drying up on the back end for us here in the bay area. but it's worth noting how much rain we're expecting to see. close to around an inch into communities like pacifica and close to an inch all the way up entameson and about a half inch the more east we go closer to the sacramento valley but still a very impressive storm that's right around the corner for us. so let take a look at the next seven days. how long is the storm going to last? now we know. it's only a saturday event. because on the back end sunday sunshine in the forecast but look at those daytime highs. low 60s still holding on tight to us until tuesday then it's low 70s and then it's suddenly we continue to warm up as high pressure builds in. bringing in upper 80s, close to the 90s as early as next thursday. so a big warm-up as we head into next week. we have to get through the rainy saturday first. g? i know but you know at least you can get today to enjoy and then sunday. just one day everyone and right now the feats aren't doing too bad. i know a little bit busier here
