midsection. and surfing trip tragedy. an american and two australians killed in the baja peninsula. the motive, the arrests, and the surprising discovery. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with breaking developments out of the middle east. the israeli military is starting to move civilians out of a section of rafah. the southern gaza city where more than a million palestinians sought refuge from the war. israel says they are directing the people to an expanded humanitarian area that includes field hospitals, tents, food, water, and other supplies. israel has been vowing to invade rafah for months now to weed out the remaining hamas militants. the move comes as cease-fire talks stalled over the weekend. cia director william burns is in the region, and there are reports that he could meet with prime minister benjamin netanyahu today. and today israelis are marking holocaust remembrance day. air raid sirens rang for two

minutes bringing traffic and people to a standstill in memory of the victims. the day carrying a heavier weight coming seven months after the october 7th massacre. cbs' ian lee joins us from london with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. momentum is building ahead of israel's anticipated assault into rafah. they're asking roughly 100,000 palestinians to evacuate north. currently roughly 1.4 million palestinians are sheltering in the city, raising fears of furthering the current humanitarian crisis. hamas militants fired rockets at a key humanitarian aid crossing between israel and the gaza strip, prompting its closure. assistance was later airdropped. israeli defense officials say at least three soldiers were killed in the strike, several others wounded. today the idf encouraged the evacuation of parts of rafah after firing toward what it says were the launch sites of the

hamas rockets. it all comes as peace talks hit another impasse over the weekend with both sides blaming one another. at a holocaust remembrance day ceremony, prime minister benjamin netanyahu said his country will defeat its enemies and seemed to rebuff on the global push for a cease-fire. >> no amount of pressure, no decision by any international forum will stop israel from defending itself. >> reporter: meanwhile, over the weekend israel's war cabinet voted to close news outlet al jazeera's offices accusing of it airing anti-israel incitement. al jazeera called the order very dangerous. cia director william burns is in the middle east as a key negotiator in the talks between israel and hamas. a source told cbs news he went to qatar for an emergency meeting with the country's leader and that the hamas delegation also traveled to qatar.

there are also israeli media reports that burns could meet with the israeli prime minister later today. anne-marie? >> before i let you go, what can you tell us about the operation happening in rafah right now? >> reporter: well, it does seem like this momentum is building up. this is something that the israeli prime minister has said is going to happen despite the international community saying that it would put over a million palestinians' lives at risk. right now it seems like it is a smaller operation than a full-scale invasion into rafah. they're asking roughly 100,000 people to move up north to places like khan younis where they can get, as israel says, humanitarian aid. but this is a very difficult situation. there's a lot of fear that if israel goes in more palestinian civilians could be put at risk, and that's why we are seeing that pressure. but it does seem like we are witnessing the beginnings of this operation, anne-marie. >> all right. ian lee in london. thank you so much. the fbi and the nypd are investigating bogus bomb threats emailed to a number of

synagogues in new york city. the threats come amid a rise in anti-semitism and pro-palestinian protests on college campuses. ucla says in-person classes will resume today after they were moved on line last week following a night of violence between demonstrators. the university also created a new office to oversee campus safety. college administrators are bracing for more protests, though, as tensions over the war spill into graduation season like what happened in michigan over the weekend. shanelle kaul has that story. >> reporter: before sunup, los angeles police armed in riot gear peacefully cleared a pro-palestinian encampment at the university of southern california capping off a busy weekend of protests. >> there was no warning, no one saw them coming in. >> reporter: this dueling protest now under scrutiny. the university of mississippi saying it is investigating student actions that were offensive including actions that conveyed hostility and racist overtones.

the controversial incident was praised by republican congressman mike collins of georgia who posted on x "ole miss taking care of business." [ chants ] saturday police arrested nearly 70 people at chicago's art institute. and at the university of virginia, police there sprayed a chemical irritant to help arrest roughly 25 protesters and tore down tents. across the country more than 2,000 demonstrators have been arrested in recent weeks. that includes nearly 300 at two new york city campuses tuesday. the city now says roughly half of those arrests were not students. >> when you're on college ground and you do not attend that college, you are an outsider. and then when you train people to do destructive things, you are an agitator. >> reporter: of the hundreds arrested in new york, the majority were released on summonses as the da now investigates. as for the investigation at the

university of mississippi, the naacp is requesting three students there be expelled. shanelle kaul, cbs news, new york. now to the new weather threat. an estimated 40 million people are at risk of severe storms including possible tornadoes in the plains and the midwest. folks in texas are starting to dry out but not before more rain added to the misery there. entire neighborhoods have been swamped leading to hundreds of rescues, and a 4-year-old boy drowned. cbs' janet shamlian reports from houston. >> reporter: a west texas twister, cars pummelled on the road south of midland amid hail the size of tennis balls. severe storms trashing in already-soggy texas. and now spreading beyond it. >> scary. it's -- because you don't know if the water's going to come in and just start taking over. >> reporter: in the houston area, the san jacinto river is raging.

>> hang tight. >> reporter: we rode along with the houston police department's marine division. >> you don't realize how much flood and current's going down. >> reporter: sergeant epi garza among the officers answering the call from a woman needing to evacuate with her pets amid treacherous conditions for everyone. >> it's pouring. >> reporter: hpd is working in teams on the san jacinto river because there are still people who want to get out as the water levels are so high. >> catch your breath. >> reporter: this dog was rescued by an officer on a jet ski. authorities say many abandoned pets have been rescued, too. they don't want to leave without them. >> that's correct. and fortunately in this case we have enough time to be able to help them out. >> reporter: the region wet and weary. houston police are hoping that this is the last day they will have to be out on rough water making rescues. janet shamlian, cbs news, houston. mexican authorities say relatives have identified the bodies of three men who disappeared last weekend while

on a camping and surfing trip in the baja peninsula. investigators say the bodies of australian brothers jake and callum robinson and american carter rhoad were found in a 50-foot-deep well about four miles from where they were killed they say thieves apparently shot and killed them to steal their truck because they wanted their tires. three suspects are now in custody. police say a fourth body was found in the same well, but it appeared to be there much plong. donald trump's so-called hush-money trial continues today in new york. on friday trump's former communications director, hope hicks, broke down in tears at one point as she testified. she described the chaos during the 2016 presidential campaign following the revelation of the "access hollywood" video where trump talked about groping women. there's more controversy now surrounding north dakota governor kristi noem's soon-to-be-released memoir. the publisher of "no going back" says at noem's request it is removing a passage about kim jong-un.

a section of i-95 had norwalk, -- in norwalk, connecticut, was shut down thursday after a gasoline tanker crashed, burst into flames, and damaged a bridge above the road. workers had to demolish the damaged overpass, and then they worked round the clock to repave parts of the interstate so it would be open for this morning's rush hour. an amber alert in new mexico, and a traffic stop turns deadly in utah. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the salt lake tribune" reports a semi-truck hit and killed a utah police officer during a traffic stop. investigators say two officers stopped the truck yesterday about 65 miles south of salt lake city after a report of a person standing on the back of the rig. police say the truck driver drove off, turned around, and crashed into the two police cars, and the officer who was killed. the truck driver was later arrested. the "albuquerque journal" says the fbi has joined the search for a missing baby in clovis, new mexico. 10-month-old eleia maria

torres' mother and another woman were found shot to death. the 5-year-old half sister was shot and is in critical condition. police believe the missing girl was taken by the killer. officials say the fathers of the children are cooperating with law enforcement. and "the buffalo news" says a 14-year-old girl was killed and five teenage boys wounded in a shooting in a parking lot. police responded to calls saturday about a large outdoor party with hundreds of young people and reports of fights. officers say they used pepper spray to break up the crowd and left with about two dozen kids still there. witnesses say a car pulled up a short time later, and shots rang out. still to come, ready to launch. boeing's starliner set to make space history tonight. sis, i'm turning into mom. ahhh, the sweater vest? nooo. my super soft skin. see? jergens original cherry almond lotion. mmmm. smooth. mom will be so proud. you're like one big baby butt.

boeing's long-delayed first flight carrying humans into space is set to launch tonight. the company's "starliner" capsule is supposed to blast off atop an "atlas" rocket from cape canaveral. on board will be two veteran nasa astronauts for a week-long mission to the international space station. the flight is seven years behind schedule due to a series of technical issues. a shakeup at abc, and an important nut recall. here's matt pieper with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: stocks closed sharply higher on wall street erasing their losses for the week after the government reported a cooldown in hiring last month. the dow gained 450. the nasdaq was up 315. s&p 500 gaining 63 points. check the pantry. some planters nuts are being recalled after the discovery of a potentially fatal contamination of listeria.

hormel foods sales says its four-ounce packages of the honey roasted peanuts and 8.7-ounce cans of planters deluxe lightly salted mixed nuts are being recalled. the nuts were shipped to publix in georgia, alabama, and north carolina as well as to dollar trees in south carolina and georgia. the president of abc news is out. kim godwin was the first black woman to lead a television network news division when she was hired from cbs three years ago. in a letter to employees last night, she said she's retiring from broadcast journalism. it comes after abc's parent walt disney company installed one of its executives, debra o'connell, to oversee its news division. it's called "the fall guy" and is a fall for the summer kickoff movie season. the ryan gosling action comedy about stunt performers opened with a below-expectations of $28.5 million. it will need sustained interest to merit its $130 million production budget.
