her family dead. san francisco leaders take action in an ongoing effort to help protect city firefighters. i talk live with a firefighter about today's
7:31 pm
important vote and the very latest in autonomous mass transit was unveiled today right here in the east bay. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> and good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. we begin tonight with some new information in that deadly crash of an electric vehicle in pleasanton last month that killed a family of four. ktvu crystal bailey joins us now with details on a complaint that was filed with federal transportation officials. crystal. >> well, heather, the loss of the entire george family in pleasanton continues to impact the community as they mourn and search for answers. tonight, though, there are more questions than there are answers as we dig into those complaints against the car they were driving a vietnamese electric car. it was a tragic crash in the quiet town of pleasanton, where tarun george, his wife renee and their sons aaron and rohan lost their lives. friends of the family say they were heading home from a birthday party when the electric car, a 2023 vinfast vf8, crashed
7:32 pm
into a tree, causing a massive blaze. this video from the manufacturer's youtube shows the same car they were driving. two weeks later, a complaint filed with the national highway traffic safety administration indicates that the george family did not own the vietnamese electric car. they were borrowing. it from a coworker. the owner filed the complaint last week, saying before the crash, they noticed the steering wheel was automatically veering to the right even when lane assist was turned on. and on april 24th, the complaint says the owner was concerned that the failure recurred while the george family was driving. the federal agency has eight other complaints about the vinfast model dating back to last summer. at least three of them mentioned steering and lane assist issues. phil recht, an attorney who formerly worked as chief counsel for nhtsa, says patterns usually catch the agency's eye. if it sees multiple complaints about about an activity or a performance issue that appear to be similar and particularly if they create severe risk.
7:33 pm
>> these are the circumstances under which nhtsa will conduct an initial or preliminary evaluation. >> pleasanton police confirmed george was driving a vinfast that first hit a pole on foothill road, then slammed into a tree, causing a fire. first responders had trouble extinguishing well, that's not uncommon in ev fires, police say. this fire reignited after it was put out. when we spoke to witnesses right after the crash, one man, who lives off foothill road, told us he heard what he thought was multiple explosions on that night. >> i heard like a big crash sound boom. every five to 10s. they boom, boom. so maybe around 5 to 8 times. >> in a statement from vinfast, a spokesperson says vinfast is aware of this tragic accident and our hearts go out to the family, the authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident and will share their findings when their work is completed. >> it's really too early to tell exactly what was at play in this crash.
7:34 pm
>> and while pleasanton police are still investigating the crash, the alameda county coroner has not completed the autopsy report. and at this time, federal regulators have not begun their own investigation. heather. >> yeah, still some investigating to do here. all right. krystal. thank you. san francisco police arrested a man after he allegedly hit two people with his car in two separate incidents this morning, including a 14 year old girl who was walking to school. both victims are expected to survive. police say the driver of a white mustang was spinning donuts at the intersection of jones and market in the city's tenderloin neighborhood. officers tried to pull the driver over, but instead of stopping well, he sped off with officers in pursuit. that pursuit then led to francisco middle school, where the driver hit the teenager, who was in a crosswalk near campus. the pursuing officer stopped to help the girl. the driver eventually crashed that mustang and officers arrested him. he faces several felony charges. new at 730 tonight, police in pleasanton arrested a woman on
7:35 pm
suspicion of stabbing h husband in a domestic dispute. ce say they responded to an apartmentpl on owens drive near west las positas boulevard, at about 1230 yestday morning. the victim was taken to a traumaenter where he's listed in critical conditiohe woman was arrested and booked into thesaaf attempted murder. police say the names of those involved will not be released due to confidentiality. laws governing domestic violence cases. all right. the latest in driverless technology was unveiled today in san ramon as ktvu tom vacar reports, the autonomous vehicle is designed to bridge a gap for commuters. >> at san ramon's bishop ranch roadhouse tuesday, the ninth annual redefining mobility summit showed off what it calls the autonomous vehicle of the future and the star of the show. the glide aways, glide car, part of a scalable, expandable mass
7:36 pm
transit system coming soon. >> this is something that you can actually see and feel and experience later in a few minutes. >> when fully completed, the system will be 28 miles long. the dedicated, narrow roadway system will stretch from antioch to oakley, with 56 boarding stations. >> the first phase is about four and a half to five miles, but connecting antioch bart station to brentwood. >> that first phase will open in three years, with. 200 autonomous glide cars servicing points or stations, as they're called every few blocks along the dedicated concrete pathway. >> and so you can take a glide car in the future by walking maybe five minutes, going to an access point, which is a station, a glide phase station. >> once at the pick up point, you use your app to hail a driverless glide car, much as you would an uber or lyft, a car dedicated to your trip and your trip only for a party of up to
7:37 pm
four or baggage or a bike. >> and it takes you to the antioch bart station without ever stopping. always a predictable journey. time >> because building this, even with a dedicated pathway, is very light construction. it can be done very quickly and it can be done far, far cheaper than dedicated rail systems. and in that sense it is superior. it's way, way cheaper than putting in railway tracks, even if it costs $1 billion a mile to build a 28 mile system, that's 28 billion. >> that's just math. our system is going to cost a fraction ten, 20% of that. >> another glide waste project is to set up a system to connect san jose airport to rail transit. tom vacar, ktvu, fox two news. >> a santa clara county judge will decide the market value of property needed for a future bart station in downtown san jose. this comes after an attempt at mediation failed between the owner of the property and the santa clara valley transportation authority, an appraiser for the vta says
7:38 pm
this property is worth nearly $9 million, but the property owners appraiser says it's worth $17 million. coming up tonight at 730, what we know about a stubborn apartment fire in oakland today that went to three alarms and a san francisco firefighter joins me live next to talk about the resolution just passed by city leaders aimed at protecting fire crews. >> and in barry weather. look at this. lots of clear skies looking out towards san francisco and a warming trend. lots of 80s and even a few thinking i should bring back my 100% all-white meat popcorn chicken combos for $6.99? you're in luck, i did. if you weren't thinking that, i bet you are now.

at the corner of sixth avenue and east eighth street. dozens of firefighters responded. the fire was brought under control in about 90 minutes, but those flames spread to a nearby single family home. both buildings sustained significant damage. no injuries were reported. firefighters say the building where this fire originated is vacant, but has a history of people trespassing. seven adults and five children have been displaced. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. new at 730 tonight, the san francisco board of supervisors tonight unanimously passing a resolution aimed at protecting city firefighters. the legislation was introduced by board president aaron peskin, and it will ban toxic carcinogens from the protective gear worn by fire crews, the chemicals that are used to help make that gear resistant to heat, water and other hazards. they do that, but they've also been increasingly linked to cancer and other serious health effects. so joining me now live is adam wood, firefighter at
7:42 pm
station seven and vice president of the san francisco firefighters cancer prevention foundation. adam, really appreciate you joining me tonight. how are you feeling about this change and this ban? >> thanks for having me, heather. we're very happy about the outcome, and we're grateful for the unanimous support we got from the board of supervisors for this resolution. we think it's going to make a big difference in firefighters lives here in san francisco, and kind of help set the tone for similar change across the country. >> how do you believe that this protective gear and the chemicals used to make it are affecting firefighters, especially in san francisco? >> well, we've known for a long time that these particular chemicals, pfas chemicals, also known as forever chemicals, have been a health risk to firefighters. but for most of that time, we've been focused on their presence in firefighting foam that's used at chemical fires, vehicle fires, airplane crashes. it's only in recent years that we've learned the
7:43 pm
extent to which they permeate the material that makes up our protective gear and the link that these chemicals have, in particular to cancers is the greatest concern for us because of our elevated risk for cancer. it's currently the number one cause of occupational death in firefighters in the united states. >> so, adam, if there are all of these safety concerns about the materials used to make this gear, why is it still being used? but why is this gear still even out there? >> there's two answers to that, heather. there's the original reason that these chemicals were used in our garments was because they're so powerful, because, as you were saying in your introduction, the ability to repel water, to be resistant to ultraviolet light and heat, their durability. that's why they were put in originally, why they are still there even after we've learned that there are much less toxic substitutes that can do the same thing can only be attributed to the influence
7:44 pm
of the chemical industry on the agency. that sets federal standards for turnouts, and we're trying to address that issue at the national level. but this local step is an important first step. >> yeah. okay. so are there some viable options out there for other types of protective gear that don't include these types of chemicals? >> yes. san francisco is one of five metropolitan major metropolitan fire departments that is currently testing two different brands of pfas free turnouts and so far, getting very good results from them in terms of how they're holding up in fire situations and how they're holding up after they're being laundered. so we're putting that data together, and i think that's going to go a long way towards allowing us to get these kind of products developed at scale and eventually approved so that we can equip every firefighter in san francisco with pfas free gear. >> yeah. okay. adam, as we mentioned, this was approved today unanimously by the board of supervisors. when does the
7:45 pm
city need to come into compliance and replace the protective gear that you currently have? >> as the ordinance is written, we have until june 30th of 2026. so we feel that's a reasonable amount of time for a pfas free alternative to be approved and available at scale to provide every san francisco firefighter with new gear. it puts the city on record that once it becomes possible to stop poisoning firefighters with their own gear, then we have to stop. >> yeah, i know this is something that that you and others have been fighting a long time for. glad to see you get this victory and thanks again to everyone, to yourself and everyone in the department for what you do for us living in the city. thanks so much, adam. appreciate it. >> thanks, heather. thanks for having us. >> all right. time now to talk about our beautiful weather. mark >> yeah, and a warming forecast as well. heather, take a look at the highs from this afternoon. you can see some 60s and some 70s out there tomorrow we will have some more 80s to report.
7:46 pm
eventually we'll have a few spots approaching the lower 90s. so here's the overall temperature trend numbers. just a few days ago we had that big cool down out there. we had, of course, the rain and the sierra snowfall over the weekend, temperatures warming up, recovering nicely, especially as we head toward thursday. so thursday, friday and saturday will be a pretty warm to hot. you can see the eventual temperature range temperatures up above the average. minor cooling as we head into the weekend, especially by sunday. and the short term we have some gusty winds developing. in fact, strong enough that a wind advisory has been issued for the north bay hills and also basically for the entire north bay. winds could be gusting over 40 miles an hour. so this runs wednesday morning from 1 a.m. until 11:00 tomorrow. so here's a satellite, at least for california. we are in the clear. no fog to speak of, just a quiet weather pattern on those winds that will develop over the next 12 hours or so. and current numbers have cooled off into the 60s and the 70s. san jose right now 68, concord checking in 70, and santa rosa in the lower 70s. here's a live camera looking out
7:47 pm
toward the golden gate bridge completely in the clear. when san francisco warms up into the 70s, that's a warm day. but by thursday, san francisco could be possibly in the lower 80s. so you will definitely notice a big time change by thursday. overnight temperatures will be in the 40s and the 50s, so somewhat of a chill in the air to start things off tomorrow morning. but by ten 11:00 you'll notice it's just going to be a warm day, upper 60s to the 70s and the warmest locations in the lower 80s. so at least for tomorrow, watching out for those those warmer winds developing, those northerly winds setting up. but we're also talking about lots of sunshine for tomorrow and then into thursday and into right on through saturday. lots of sunshine. it's warm to hot 80s and in the warmest locations will be back up into the lower 90s. as we start off the weekend . so take a look at the numbers for tomorrow. sunny and breezy. temperatures in the upper 60s, coast side, 70s around the bay. the warmest locations inland back up into the lower 80s. around 80 to 82 degrees. if you think tomorrow is warm, the warming will continue into
7:48 pm
thursday and into friday. it's just a big, warm forecast for those two days and then the weekend. some minor cooling as you can see, especially by sunday. but at least compared to last weekend, remember all the rainfall saturday and the sierra snowfall? we're back to a little bit of a mini warm up over the next several days. >> heather. okay i prefer this weather than what you were talking about last weekend. all right, still ahead tonight at 730, we'll have details on the allegations of retaliation and poor treatment of the inmates transferred out of the recently closed women's prison in dublin. also ahead tonight, the new legislation that will allocate millions of dollars to improve the living conditions of san mateo county farm workers. d the arrest over a slow network is no network for business.
