the hundreds of protesters rallying at uc berkeley over israeli military operations in the gaza city of rafah. but some jewish students fear campus demonstrations are only intensifying. >> i've never felt more ostracized or isolated, ever in my life. >> if berkeley's brand is free speech, you're witnessing it first hand pushed back against israel's operation in rafah. >> here in the bay area and nationwide tonight, we have learned the united states has paused a shipment of bombs to israel. good evening. i'm julie julie haener, and i'm mike mibach. >> protesters at cal joining demonstrators nationwide in what's called a hands off rafah rally. ktvu tori gaines live tonight from the campus in berkeley. tori. a lot of noise today, but things remaining peaceful tonight. >> things are peaceful. it's actually a pretty quiet night

here tonight, mike, but that is not a reflection of earlier today. it was not at all a chaotic event. it was incredibly organized. but let me tell you, it's nearly two weeks into this encampment here at uc berkeley. the pro-palestinian demonstrators tell. us they are looking for the university to divest its support from israel. and those cries came to a fever pitch after israel's newest operation in rafah, gaza. all eyes on you. >> all eyes on you. we will never leave you here at uc berkeley, hundreds of students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members filled sproul plaza with chants for revolution in response to israel's attacks on rafah. >> it's been nearly two weeks since the pro-palestine encampment sprouted up at cal. and the number of tents has grown. a lot of people from different faiths, from different ethnic backgrounds, from different political beliefs, all here because we believe that the genocide going on in gaza right

now is something that we have the power to impact, and the power to stop this is now the largest and longest lasting encampment in the world, and it has been remarkably peaceful. some faculty members on campus stood and chanted side by side with their students in calling for divestment. >> so many of us are sort of forced to be complicit with in, you know, illegal, immoral war that is being waged on innocent populations in our name with our funds. >> demonstrators in support of palestine have been particularly vocal on uc berkeley's campus. while some students feel empowered by the demonstrations, others see them in a different light. calls for intifada or the shaking off of israeli control were heard ringing through the. plaza. but the history of intifada brings back challenging memories for some jewish and israeli people. >> i've never felt more ostracized or isolated ever in my life, nor have i ever felt such an overwhelm feeling of anxiety and distress. simply

just existing. just simply being in my existence as a jewish american. >> uc berkeley is one of six schools currently under congressional investigation for claims of anti-semitism on campus. since the october 7th attacks in israel. though some students are struggling with the new reality on campus, one faculty member tells us he has full faith in his students. >> this is the best public school in the world. why wouldn't we trust these students to understand how to negotiate with their administration? what are just unnecessary demands? do we trust our youth or not? and i think that i do. >> we are here to tell them that as long as back out here live at uc berkeley in sproul plaza, where you can see that in moment is still going strong, those demonstrators here in the in the encampment tell me they are willing to stay as long as it takes to see their divestment goals met. now, we reached out to uc. excuse me. we reached out to uc berkeley for comment on today's rally. the university had no statement to offer. live

in berkeley tori gaines, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, tori, thank you for that. tonight, pro-palestinian protesters rallied in the streets across several major us cities. three people, sky three, 3000. >> shine three. three. >> three palestine tonight. dozens of demonstrators gathered outside the israeli consulate in midtown atlanta. they marched peacefully for several hours, calling for an immediate ceasefire in gaza and in new york city. this is what it looked like earlier this evening in union square. the crowd eventually marched up sixth avenue to the steps of the public library. there was a large police presence in the area, but so far, protests there have also remained peaceful. >> taking a live look now of the israel rafah border, the sun now up in the city where israel is carrying out military operations after seizing control of the gaza strip side of the border crossing with egypt, the israeli military insists this is a limited operation, but there is no word how long it will take. the closed border means un

humanitarian teams in gaza will run out of fuel by tomorrow. the israeli operation into rafah came just hours after hamas said it would accept a ceasefire proposal brokered by egypt and qatar. israel insists the deal does not meet their demands. all right, more now on the united states decision to pause a bomb shipment to israel, a senior administration official says the call was made last week over fears of a full scale attack on rafah. the shipment. contained 3500 bombs, but was put on hold as concerns started to rise that the explosives would be used in highly populated communities. the biden administration says it opposes a large scale military operation in rafah, and for months has been urging israel to proceed with caution. despite that decision, president biden reiterated today us support for israel is ironclad. >> stanford university reminding students that the encampment at white plaza is in violation of

university policies. officials say it goes against a policy on overnight camping and on the equitable use of the plaza. the university says in a statement. disciplinary cases are proceeding and more names of students are being submitted. some may have their diplomas held while their cases are processed and stanford officials say students should be aware that suspension is a possible outcome tomorrow. >> the superintendent of the berkeley unified school district will testify before congress amid allegations of anti-semitism in her schools, superintendent annika ford martel will appear before a house subcommittee on education in march. a federal complaint was filed against berkeley schools alleging a failure to take action to stop harassment of jewish students. school leaders from berkeley, new york city and montgomery county, maryland are expected to take part in tomorrow's congressional hearing, and you can find complete coverage of the war in gaza and. the reaction here in

the u.s. online. just visit our website at ktvu.com. new at ten. >> some san francisco students spoke out about possible closures as the school district discussed its latest financial audit. auditor christie white outlined her findings at a special meeting tonight. white said that the district barely meets the minimum financial economic reserve and that increased pension costs remain a significant factor, along with concerns about loss of enrollment. all of this as the district considering potential school closures. >> i don't think it's okay to close schools because it is going to hurt kids that are already struggling with learning english, homelessness and poverty. different kids need different things, including more help, and the budget will be the topic of future meetings with a list of possible closures expected in the fall. >> the auditor did find that there was improvement in the district's troubled payroll system that caused months of problems for teachers and staff last year, white said that those errors have been substantially

corrected. >> soccer fans gathering at paypal park tonight, as the san jose earthquakes and the oakland roots faced off for their first ever competitive match. both teams participating in the lamar hunt u.s. open cup tournament with the quakes ultimately securing a victory with a final score one nil. ktvu south bay reporter lamonica peters joins us now live from paypal park, with more from fans at tonight's game. lamonica >> julie, this was a pretty important game for both teams and fans told us it was also an opportunity for them to show some love for an oakland sports team. with bay area bragging rights on the line, san jose earthquakes fans say they were looking forward to playing the roots. >> i was with san jose from going long back before the roots even started, but, and i'm also on this side of the bay, so it's an easier commute for me. >> the lamar hunt u.s. open cup

gives semi-pro teams, like the oakland roots a chance to play major league soccer teams like the san jose earthquakes. this is the first time the teams played one another in a competitive match. this earth quakes fan says he loves dressing up for games, and the idea of playing a crosstown rival. the rivalry is always good for two teams because the both teams will grow, especially oakland being right next to us and oakland staying at the bay because everyone else are going to oakland. roots fans also made their presence known at the earthquakes home game, sitting together in one section, chanting and waving flags. >> and i'm here because the roots need our support. they need us to be here. they need us to shout out, that's how here roots fans also say this matchup is another way to show how much they want teams to stay in oakland. >> the fans.

the criminal justice system failed her brother, and she wants to raise awareness. >> quack quack quack. >> this youtube video captures jordan semler's break dancing skills. his stage was often pier 39, in san francisco. i see a man that loved his craft, jordan was very happy in bringing smiles to other people's lives and their faces. but that joy with which jordan lived his life suddenly ended. on november 25th, 2022. he was found dead in the driveway of the apartment building in the diamond heights neighborhood, where he lived with his longtime girlfriend, sarah buchanan. she had stabbed him once near the chest. buchanan was convicted of involuntary manslaughter last month, and sentenced to three years, but she's expected to be released next month with credit for time served. >> they're shocked to, so i'm still working through that. >> buchanan will be free less than two years after killing jordan, her attorney released a

statement which said in part, the verdict was both fair and just because it was based on the applicable law and relevant evidence presented at the trial. >> i want to expose and share that the legal process is not fair and just simpler, says there was no black juror in the trial and she says there were crucial evidence and witnesses ruled inadmissible. >> the district attorney's office said in part, we take each case seriously and put on the best case we can based on the facts, evidence and the law to meet our burden of proof. in this case, we sought a conviction for murder, and the jury returned a conviction of involuntary manslaughter. >> there is a great issue with men that suffer with domestic violence, but it's something that's not visible. or it's not, focused on. >> sempler says her brother suffered from emotional and physical abuse in his ten year relationship with buchanan, according to court documents. jordan came home drunk, woke

buchanan up and called her derogatory names. she said she lunged at him with a knife to scare him, an account that sampler says doesn't tell the whole story. >> there is, this this emotion, this feeling of wanting to persist, to just persist, to fight, sempler says she will fight for justice. >> denied to her brother, jordan buchanan is expected to be released june 14th. at her next court hearing, sempler says the family will take action, including filing a civil lawsuit against her. simpler says she attended every court hearing and that navigating the court system was very difficult for her in the family. >> and since this all began, has she had any conversations, often with her brother's girlfriend at all, since she's been in custody? >> no, she says she has not, and that she feels betrayed because she had been welcomed into the family. so what had happened is simply something they're having a very difficult time with. right amber?

>> thank you. the alameda county district attorney's office said holding people accountable is its highest priority as it released its annual report today , da pamela price said in her first year in office, prosecutors saw a slight rise in the number of reports from local law enforcement at just under 12,000. about 63% of those resulted in a case being filed. the office said they're working to provide data on specific charges and outcomes, but that will take a while longer. the da's office had just started using the system when the covid forced the courts to shut down. >> governor newsom wants to hold cities and counties accountable when they fail to adequately address homelessness. the governor is introducing new legislation to require municipalities to consider the needs of homeless populations as they comply with state housing planning processes. the measure would also adjust income categories, allowing people with included in those to be low income in city and county housing plans.

>> in sacramento today, the vice president of california's energy commission said there is no clear evidence so far of price gouging by oil refineries. but during an oversight hearing today, he said oil companies are profiting from price hikes. a new law allows the commission to set a maximum gross gasoline refining margin and a penalty for refiners that exceed it. officials are now trying to determine if that cap and penalty should be implemented. >> we are still in the process of evaluating the opinions of the of the experts we have. okay, currently, what we understand is there's a divergence of opinion. >> i think the personally that the oil companies, the four major companies that control our refinery market here are manipulating prices. >> the commission is expected to make its decision by the end of the year. >> checking in on the weather. it turned out to be a beautiful day today. it's a beautiful night tonight. it will be the same tomorrow. a little bit

warmer, though, both in the day and during the evening. we'll get to the low 80s tomorrow afternoon. we got some wind to talk about. a wind advisory will be in effect for near fairfield. out towards the napa valley, out towards black point. so it's going to be pretty breezy in the north bay and in the inland areas of the east and south bay. so wind gusts potentially up to 35, maybe even 40 miles an hour, especially out by winters and out by davis in those areas. temperatures are warming up, though, with this high pressure ridge where the wind is coming from as well. but as the winds move more northerly as they will, nor a little bit northeasterly as we go into the next couple of days, temperatures could easily even in the bay area, reach the low 90s. so we'll see very low 90s in the inland valleys, perhaps some 91, 92, 93. but for us, 89 to 90 is a real possibility. so we haven't seen that yet. looks like it's a good chance i'll see you back here with the full forecast in just a minute. >> all right bill, thank you. stormy daniels took to the stand

released this sketch following the shooting that happened on august 30th of last year. two people were found with gunshot wounds on east 18th street near fifth avenue. to my william of oakland was pronounced dead. opd says the suspect was seen driving this white ford f-150 pickup tragedy in the east bay tonight. >> the law enforcement community is mourning the loss of an alameda county dispatcher who was killed by an alleged drunk driver. ktvu henry lee spoke to the victim's family, who say tonight a young girl is now without her mother. >> her voice, her laughter, her outlook. >> terry godinho sharing what she'll miss most about her daughter. antonette finau, an alameda county sheriff's dispatcher who was killed by a suspected drunk driver while on her way to work. manu finau says his granddaughter, 11 year old aliana, struggling with her loss just before mother's day. >> she's going through the

motion of, expecting that texts, expecting her mom to call. >> the crash happened at east 14th street and 150th avenue in san leandro at about 1115 sunday night. finials honda civic was broadsided by an alleged drunk driver. the wreck happened just blocks from the sheriff's dispatch center. sheriff's deputies got to the scene first. >> one of our deputies recognized right away it was one of our own, sheriff yesenia sanchez, said finau, who was a single mother, was also a team player. >> antoinette got in her car, left her family and was ready to go to work. >> she was coming to work on an overtime shift after she had already completed a regular hours shift because she is that person. >> just last month, finau appeared in this video posted by the sheriff's office honoring dispatchers, knowing that when they call 911 because they're having an emergency and that i get to be the voice that makes sure that they get the assistance that they need. >> it's definitely rewarding and self-fulfilling. at the end of the day, it's a blessing to be here. >> her family says finau, was

would happen as the troubled facility was shutting down, she was released two weeks ago before the prison officially closed. >> ktvu cristina rendon tells us the woman now wants to be a voice for others. >> how did you find out the prison was closing and what went through your mind? >> we all woke up to it on the news. just all the tvs scrolling across the bottom said dublin prison closing today. i mean the whole place was in a panic. people were crying. my absolute best friend in there is 80 years old. and to see what she went through, that just fear of being shackled, she was a self-surrender. she's never been handcuffed before. so to see what she went through over this, i can't i can't explain it.

>> kendra drysdale called it the most devastating news. days earlier, she and others incarcerated at fci dublin had hoped things would change, with a special master appointed to oversee reforms immediately, they started shredding documents. like bags and bags of documents. >> kendra incarcerated for distribution of methamphetamine, says her case files were destroyed. the program she completed at other prisons and anything she earned at dublin, like certificates and a diploma, gone. >> it looked like i had completed nothing, anything positive that were in our files. we're no longer there. people's compassionate releases were shredded at the beginning of the year. >> kendra testified in federal court about the retaliation that she faced for reporting an officer who she says inappropriately touched her breasts during a pat down search in 2023. >> i've been incarcerated for a long time now, and never, ever has anyone done that to me

before. maybe she was just being overly thorough, i don't know, but i felt like it was not policy and it was not okay. >> she also testified about lack of medical care. >> did not take me for the ct scans until judge gonzalez, until i testified in front of judge gonzalez, she that's when they took me, right after i testified. and i never got the results or got to see a doctor again after that. they will do the immediate care that they're forced to do. but after that, there's no follow up care at all. >> in response, the bop spokesperson says medical care is given with a person's needs addressed on a case by case basis and treatment tailored to their condition. as. women were transferred out in preparation for the closure, the 50 year old says she was set to go to a halfway house in oakland. her attorneys pushed to have her credits looked at again by officials. turns out kendra had already completed her time. she

was supposed to be released in february instead of april. >> i can't say whether they purposely miscalculated my credits, but they are. they're saying it was an error and the federal judge agreed. >> kendra's record was cleared two weeks ago. she was released from fci dublin, reuniting here with her family, though she was able to go home, she still thinks about the women who remain incarcerated. >> the idea that you don't know where you're going, you know you're going to be farther away from your family. there's no chance of visits any longer. hi. hi hi. >> she's now adjusting to her new life on a farm in santa cruz county. >> i had to go to costco the other day, and i cried and. it's overwhelming, but, my family's helping me through it with freedom comes survivor's guilt. i am blessed and that's where the guilt comes in. because i am very blessed. i felt like it's not fair for me to be home when they're suffering so bad.

>> kendra is also pushing for accountability. the first step act, or fsa, allows people incarcerated in federal prison to earn time credits towards early release, and the second chance act lets eligible people spend some of their final 12 months of their sentence in a community correctional facility or halfway house. >> the population of the bop would decrease immensely. there's is so many people right now in the bop that are eligible for the second chance act, and that are not going home, the bop told us. >> all people in custody are regularly reviewed to ensure they're given the appropriate credits and placement in community settings. when eligible. >> i have a family that loves me. i have, i'm sober today. i have, you know, i have so much going for me. i will not stop working with the coalition and, working whatever i can to help to fight for everyone's rights.

>> and again, that was our cristina rendon reporting for complete coverage of the fci dublin closure. just head to our website at ktvu.com. >> new at ten. authorities say a man who shot himself after leading police on an 80 mile chase through three different counties on friday, remains in critical condition. the chp began pursuing the man when a call came in about a shooting on south 101, in santa rosa. the driver, in a silver toyota corolla, led officers to fairfield. interstate 80 was shut down both directions while swat teams tried to get him to surrender. he was later taken to the hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. we have new information tonight on the crash in pleasanton that killed a family of four, nearly two weeks ago to ruin george, his wife renee, and their sons aaron and rowan were all killed when the electric car they were driving a 2023 vinfast vf eight, slammed into a tree. >> now, a complaint has been filed with the national highway traffic safety administration indicating the george family did

not own that car. they were borrowing it from a coworker. the owner filed the complaint last week, saying before the crash he noticed the steering wheel was automatically veering to the right even when lane assist was turned on. there have been eight other complaints about the vinfast model dating back to last summer. phil recht, an attorney who formerly worked as chief counsel for nhtsa, says patterns usually catch the agency's eye if it sees multiple complaints, about an activity or a performance issue that appear to be similar and particularly if they, create severe risk, these are the circumstances under which nhtsa will conduct an initial or preliminary evaluation action. >> in a statement from vinfast, a spokesperson says vinfast is aware of this tragic accident and our hearts go out to the family, the authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident and will

share their findings when their work is completed. >> in san francisco, police say they arrested a man who hit two people with his car in two separate incidents this morning, including a 14 year old girl who was walking to school. police say the driver of a white mustang was doing donuts at the intersection of jones and market in the tenderloin. officers tried to pull that driver over, but instead of stopping, the driver sped off with officers in pursuit. that pursuit led to francisco middle school, where the driver hit a 14 year old girl walking in a crosswalk near campus. the pursuing officer stopped to help treat the girl, they say. continuing the chase, the mustang was just too dangerous at the time based on the fact that the individual fled the scene after hitting a pedestrian, he continued to drive recklessly and failed to stop at another vehicle collision involving a juvenile pedestrian. >> he posed a risk to the public. >> the driver eventually crashed the mustang less than a mile

san francisco is one of five metro major metropolitan fire departments that is currently testing two different brands of pfas free turnouts. so we're putting that data together, and i think that's going to go a long way towards allowing us to get these kind of products developed at scale and eventually approved so that we can equip every firefighter in san francisco with pfas free gear. the city has until 2026 to find an alternative solution to the current firefighting gear. >> i want to take a look at the weather. it's going to be another warm day or warmer day tomorrow. highs today look like these. lots of mid and upper 70. so they warmed a few degrees over yesterday. tomorrow highs will come up a good eight degrees 5 to 8 degrees maybe ten degrees in a place like or hayward tomorrow come up to 78 degrees. so we're going to see lots of low 80s tomorrow. that's the plan. and then continues to warm as we head into thursday, friday and then saturday and then sunday. it'll cool off a little bit. there's no fog at

the coast. this pattern is such that the winds blow more parallel to the coastline, so more northerly. and that kind of tears the fog out. and that's where we are. that fog got fractured last night. we did have it yesterday, but it got pulled apart. it'll come back. it'll be back, but probably not for the next 3 or 4 days. the time or the temperature line. you can see it going up and up. up. it peaks as we get into wednesday and thursday. and then the wind advisory, you can see picking up parts of the north bay, strong northerly winds really gusting down through the valley. a lot of you will notice breezy day tomorrow. most of you say san jose and hayward, but the really the heaviest winds will be noticed out by vacaville, antioch, vallejo, eastern napa, those places. so we'll keep an eye on that for you. that wind advisory will verify and the winds should come up by tomorrow morning. i have a model i'll show you in a minute, but the wind should be up by tomorrow morning around nine, 10:00 in the morning. and then they should come up again on thursday morning. so next couple of mornings should be pretty
