nbc 10 news starts now. >> this morning, some septa workers have getting ready to vote on a possible strike. a report coming up. new jersey governor chris christie has some harsh words for the obama administration, but does it mean he's eyeing a run for the white house? a little bit of cloud cover this morning as we take a live look at center city and the comcast building. later on, it will be sunny but windy. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary conners. it's 6:00 on this sunday. michelle grossman is tracking the cloudy conditions outside right now and some light shower activity in parts of the region. right, michelle?

>> yeah. a cold front is sparking teeny tiny showers in our northern suburbs. some skies seeing clearer skies, so it's all different across the board this morning. we're looking mild pretty much everywhere as we wake up this morning. we're looking at 60 in philadelphia. 55 in allentown. 53 in lancaster. in the 40s in mount pocono. 57 in atlantic city. 61 degrees in wild wood. so the big story today being the winds. we're going to see the winds whipping as we head throughout the afternoon to evening hours. right now seeing breezy conditions. 13 miles per hour in lancaster. 13 miles per hour in philadelphia. 14 in wilmington. you can see that direction from the northwest. so we're going to have that cool air from canada. temperatures not rising very far from the number you're seeing now. so for today, 60 by 8:00 a.m. by 10:00, mostly sunny skies. breezy, 61. and by noon, 63 degrees. we'll talk more about the numbers today, the winds, and also 70s in your seven-day. that's straight ahead.

>> looking forward it to. thank you, michelle. nearly 5,000 septa workers have been on the job without a contract for months and today those workers will vote on whether they may strike. nbc 10's matt delucia is live. i'm sure a lot of septa riders as they're planning for the workweek ahead want to know what this means for them. >> reporter: the strike vote for authorization is happening later today. that will be at 3:00. and this affects subways, trolleys, buses, and maintenance workers. as you can tell, service is still running right now. despite this vote, it does not mean that workers will go on strike today. septa says that it has been given no notification that a work stoppage is imminent. that said, if a strike is approved by the 4,700 members of the transport workers union, then the leadership says it will decide on a date and time for that to happen. and that is if contract negotiations fail. twu has been without a contract since march. the union president tells us he is still making efforts at the

bargaining table, but continuing to work without a contract, he says, is unfair to members and passengers. septa says that both sides have been meeting to reach an agreement. big sticking points have been pensions and health care. regional rail, that is a separate issue, but if septa does strike, the subways, trolleys, buses, and the maintenance workers, septa says it does have a con tin gin general plan. i've been talking about some of the riders who depend on septa. they have some strong thoughts about this. i'm putting some of that audio together. >> thank you, matt. new from overnight, a man is in critical condition following this crash in philadelphia. nbc 10 was on the scene at east crown avenue in morell park,

where two pickup trucks collided around 12:30 this morning. police are now investigating the cause of this crash. the u.s. ambassador to the united nations is on her way to west africa to visit the countries hit hardest by the ebola virus. samantha power is expected to land in guinea today. she'll also visit liberia and sierra leone. power will tour ebola coordination centers and she will meet with u.s. and u.n. personnel in the region. her visit is intended to draw attention to the need for increased international response to the outbreak. meanwhile, new jersey, new york, and now illinois have mandatory quarantines for some travelers coming from west africa. it's in response to the case of dr. craig spencer. he arrived in new york city from liberia and then became ill with the deadly virus this week. ebola survivors like dr. rick sackra worry that the 21-day

quarantine will keep people from helping overseas. >> you'll have to take another 31 days out of commission. >> so it's a real concern. and most are volunteers. >> all of them, i think. >> in terms of dr. spencer's condition, it has gotten worse, but that was expected. health officials say, though, he remains awake and communicative at bellevue hospital. another survivor of ebola, nancy writebol, has donated plasma to dr. spencer. writebol was one of the first americans diagnosed with the deadly virus. she contracted it while working as a missionary in liberia. a nurse in newark, new jersey, who returned to the u.s. this week after taking care of ebola patients in west africa, she's under the mandatory quarantine and this morning she is criticizing the way that she says she's being treated. as we told you yesterday morning, preliminary tests for ebola came back negative for nurse kaci hickox. newark university hospital is not saying if she will remain there for the rest of the 21-day

quarantine period or if she will be released, but she is there right now. yesterday in "the dallas morning news," hickox called the measure "a frenzy of disorganization and fear that made her feel like a criminal." in our area, the coalition of west african countries affected by ebola held a rally yesterday to raise awareness and money in southwest philadelphia. the coalition is made up of people and organizations with ties to guinea, liberia, and sierra leone. for more information, you can go to our website nbc10.com. we have realtime updates on the latest developments in our area and around the country. was it a random attack, or was a philadelphia man targeted? that's one of the things that police are investigating this morning after a couple beat the man with a bat and then shot him. we first told you about this yesterday. this happened at second and carpenter streets in the queen village neighborhood of philadelphia. the 36-year-old victim told police that the couple walked up to him and said you know what you did, and then the woman hit him with the bat.

when the victim tried to run away, the man shot him in the leg. the victim is now in critical condition, and so far there are no arrests in this case. now to decision 2014, with elections across the country a little more than a week away, a visit to iowa by new jersey governor chris christie is feeding the ongoing speculation that he may run for president in 2016. in his speech during a birthday bash for iowa's governor last night, christie said, "america used to control events both here at home and around the world, and now it seems that our fate is being dictated by others. he went on to say that it is because of the lack of leadership that we have in the white house. it has been six long years, but i bring you the good news, there are only two more years left. his visit comes as a recent bloomberg politics des moines register poll found that just 6% of likely republican caucus goers in iowa say that christie would be their first choice for president. you may remember it was just two

years ago this week when president obama and governor christie were side by side, touring the sandy-ravaged jersey shore together. christie was praising the president for the government's response to the storm. mr. obama returned a few months later for another tour. one week from today, president obama is scheduled to be in philadelphia. he'll be campaigning with democrat tom wolf. he is running for pennsylvania governor. he is trying to unseat the current governor, republican incumbent tom corbett. his administration claims that internal polling shows that corbett is closing the gap on tom wolf's lead. next, there is new information this morning into the shooting suspect accused of killing two sheriff's deputies. we'll tell you why authorities say the suspect should not have had the chance to pull off the deadly crime. plus, firefighters rush to rescue a horse trapped in a pool. we'll show you how they made the save.

this is nbc 10 news. >> at 11 minutes after 6:00 this morning, here is a live look at boat house row. you can see from the camera, it's a little bit windy out there. we do expect the winds to kick up today. once the clouds push out, it will be sunny. meteorologist michelle grossman expects temperatures to climb into the mid 60s by later on. it was a solemn procession as men and women in blue honor one of their own. mike davis is one of two deputies who was killed on friday during a series of shootings that scattered across 30 miles. two others were hurt in the shootings. davis was killed 26 years to the day when his father died in the line of duty. meanwhile, we are learning new information about that shooting suspect, seen right here on the stretcher.

u.s. immigration and customs enforcement officials say that marcello marquez was deported twice, most recently in 2001. he and his wife are being held without bail. in oklahoma city, a man suspected of damaging a ten commandments monument is being questioned. authorities say the man then walked into a federal building, spit on a picture of president obama, and blamed satan for the incident. according to oklahoma's governor, she is looking into security concerns regarding the capital. six more states are now recognizing same-sex marriages. alaska, arizona, idaho, north carolina, west virginia, and wyoming join the 26 other states and washington, d.c. couples married in these states will qualify for federal benefits, including social security and veterans benefits. in our area, same-sex marriage is now legal in pennsylvania, new jersey, and delaware.

an apparent bomb threat grounded a jet in western canada. the plane landed yesterday after it received a call threatening the plane. 98 passengers were held onboard before they were transferred by bus to the terminal. authorities arrested one man on the flight as a person of interest. now to some news in phoenix. there's no word on when 800 hotel guests will be allowed to return after a fire broke out. this happened in an electrical room of the downtown sheridan yesterday morning. firefighters arrived quickly to snuff out the flames. nobody was hurt. the hotel is now working to relocate many of the guests. the sheridan, by the way, opened in 2008. it is billed as arizona's largest hotel. take a look at this video. pretty incredible. officials say a horse is doing okay after it was rescued from a pool in arizona. a homeowner called firefighters yesterday telling them that his horse fell into the swimming

pool. a veterinarian was also called to the scene to tranquilize the animal. rescuers then used straps to slowly pull the horse out of the water. it's still unclear how exactly it got there in the first place. maybe it was a diving horse. coming up next, finding the right college could be stressful and confusing. coming up, the event that could help high schoolers and their parents sort it all out. >> good day to be outdoors today. yesterday was almost picture perfect. today not as perfect. little breezy right now. temperatures not rising very far from this number. we'll talk more about it coming up.

weekend. sunshine returning. looking at the winds picking up. the headlines on your sunday. sunny sunday. we're going to see the sun returning. a little cloudy in some spots. partly cloudy in philadelphia. but that sunshine will return for everyone. not as warm as we were yesterday. yesterday we topped out around 70. today closer to 65, 66. still above normal for this time of year, but not the picture-perfect we saw yesterday. the winds will be whipping. we're already seeing breezy conditions. by this afternoon, winds could be near 30 miles per hour, gusting near 30 miles per hour. right now we're looking at cape may. looking at mostly cloudy skies near cape may. we'll see that once again, but it will be windy. winds already breezy. winds out of the west-northwest at 13 miles per hour. it is warmer than this time yesterday, about 11 degrees warmer. temperatures right now mainly in the 50s. 57 in pottstown. 47 in mount pocono. 60 degrees in philadelphia.

temperatures to the south and east mainly in the low 50s compared to the 30s we were seeing yesterday. 53 melville. a mild start to the day. we'll not going far from these numbers throughout the afternoon. mostly clear right now in philadelphia. seeing just a few clouds. we saw some clouds overnight that kept the temperature up overnight, but now we're starting to see those clouds eroding. we have a front moving through. it's sparking teeny tiny showers well to the north of philadelphia. winds right now, a little breezy in some spots. 13 miles per hour in philadelphia as well as lancaster. we're going to see these numbers really jump as we head throughout the afternoon. this is a look at your future gust as you head throughout the afternoon into the evening hours, and they're really remaining around 25 miles per hour, even up to 30 at times, so keep that in mind as you head out today. maybe you're going to look at some fall festivals, some scare crows. 31 miles per hour out of the northwest. that's a gust at seven p.m. it's staying with us and

>> and here is a live look over center city. just about 30 minutes past 6:00 this morning. right now all is dark and relatively quiet at this hour, but once the sun comes up, the clouds will push out. temperatures not as warm as yesterday, but still a little bit above average. >> no joke. mo'ne davis bringing it. >> i'm not getting in the box against her. >> a perfect strike. that's what mo'ne davis of philadelphia did before game four of the world series. monet got a roaring ovation from the crowd in san francisco yesterday. she also took photos with fans. she munched on a sundae and met hank aaron and frank robinson. but what topped it all says monet was getting a phone call from her favorite player. phillies second baseman chase utley.

we'll hear more from her in sports. we're talking about type 1 diabetes. according to research, the number of cases has increased, 70% in the past 20 years. as chris kato reports, a local man knows very well that there is a lot of support for kids living with the disease. >> he doesn't like needles now, so you can imagine his terror when as a little boy a doctor told him he would have to do to manage his newly diagnosed disease. >> for a 6-year-old who's in kindergarten, telling him he has to take injections every day and prick your finger for your blood sugar, it's scary. >> reporter: nate eventually eliminated the needles, which was a constant reminder that he's different from the other kids. >> how do i explain to my friends i'm diabetic? my whole life changed. >> reporter: his life changed again at age 8, when his mom forced him to go to a new summer camp called camp freedom. >> i cried all the way there

because i didn't want to go. i cried all the way home because i didn't want to leave. >> reporter: there he found himself surrounded by 100 other kids with type 1 diabetes. >> i gave me this support system that i'm not this young kid experiencing this alone. >> reporter: he's been to camp every year since 2001 and is now a head counselor, teaching kids that diabetes doesn't have to put limits on them, and that's just a summer job. at camp, nate was recruited to work for the american diabetes association. he coordinates special events, like the one coming up november 1st, step out, walk to stop diabetes. philadelphia's is the largest in the country, and this year with the help of 6,000 walkers, they hope to be the first to raise a million dollars. money that will fund programs like camp freedom, and more importantly, says nate, research to find a cure. >> not only for me, but for my friends and for my campers. >> reporter: and listen to this. five years after nate was dying fo -- diagnosed with juvenile

skies, if not mostly clear skies. we will see lots of sunshine as we head throughout the day. we're looking at windy conditions. temperatures pretty mild for this time of day. 60 in philadelphia. 50 toss the north and west. 53 in lancaster. so we're waking up to ten or maybe even 20 degrees warmer. winds would be the big story. we're already seeing the winds. a little breezy at times in some spots. 13 miles per hour in lancaster. we'll see them anywhere from ten to 20, as we head throughout the afternoon, and gusting closer to 30. for today, plan on a windy one by 8:00. 60 by 10:00. and by noon, 63 degrees. sunshine today. sunshine on monday. but we are tracking some showers during your workweek. that's straight ahead. today, septa union workers

talking with this morning say they are tired of the back and forth that is putting their ride in jeopardy. >> going to make it hard out here for a lot of different people. people who work every day, 24/7. you know, i mean, the septa people down here, they're going to be okay. they're going to be on vacation. but the people that struggle every day are not going to have no way to get to work or get to school or anything like that. >> reporter: some folks out here tell me that the workers should get what they are asking for. big sticking points have been pensions and health care. we're talking about all of the service except regional rail. that is under a separate negotiation and a tentative deal has been reached with that. but if a strike does happen in the future, septa says it will issue a service interruption plan. but the riders i've been talking with out here all morning tell me that they hope it does not come to that. matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> thank you, matt. new from overnight, a man is in critical condition following this crash in philadelphia. nbc 10 was on the scene at east

crown avenue in morell park, that's where two pickup trucks collided around 12:30 this morning. police are now investigating the cause of the crash. today the u.s. ambassador to the united nations is expected to arrive in guinea. samantha power will focus her attention on the need for increased international response in the countries hit hardest by ebola. meanwhile, the fiancee of the new york city doctor with ebola is beginning three weeks of quarantine at the couple's apartment. morgan dixon was released from bellevue hospital last night. the new york health department says that while she has no symptoms, it is a necessary precaution because her fiance, dr. craig spencer, tested positive. this weekend, a cleaning crew disinfected the apartment complex where they live. neighbors say, though, they're not worried. >> i'm happy that she's home. she didn't catch it. that means other people in the building probably won't catch it. >> i feel for him too just because everyone's freaking out. >> dr. spencer's condition has

gotten worse, but health officials say they expected that. even so, the doctor remains awake and communicative. at bellevue hospital, he's getting state of the art anti-viral and plasma treatments. he's been at the hospital since thursday when he first reported having a fever. also under mandatory quarantine is the nurse in newark, new jersey, who returned to the u.s. this week after taking care of ebola patients in west africa. this morning, she is criticizing the way she says she's being treated. as we told you yesterday morning, preliminary tests for ebola came back negative for nurse kaci hickox. newark university hospital isn't saying if she'll remain there for the rest of the 21-day quarantine or if she'll be released. the isolation policy is part of a new mandate by the governors of new jersey and new york and illinois is getting in on it. they're requiring a mandatory quarantine for anybody arriving at newark or jfk airports who has had direct contact with anybody infected with the deadly virus, that they go under the mandatory quarantine. yesterday in "the dallas morning

with a bat and then shot him. we first told you about this yesterday morning. this happened at second and carpenter streets in queen village. here's what we know. the 36-year-old victim told police that the consumer walked up to him and said, you know what you did. then the woman hit him with the bat. when the victim tried to run away, the man shot him in the leg. a neighbor describes what happened next. >> we heard people yelling at each other, some obscenities. immediately after that, the man was saying help me, somebody call the balance or the cops. >> the victim right now is in critical condition. police are trying to determine if this is a random attack or if the man was targeted for a reason. in the nicetown neighborhood of philadelphia, investigators are looking into what caused a fire that forced a family of 20 out of their home. this happened around 3:30 yesterday afternoon on the 3800 block of north 15th street. crews had the blaze under control within a half-hour. fortunately, nobody was hurt. right now the family is staying at the red cross house.

let's head now to atlantic city, where friends and loved ones are hoping for the safe return of a missing mom. nbc 10 was at a vigil last night for sapphire wiggins. the 23-year-old has not been heard from since october 15th. last week, police found wiggins' car parked outside of her apartment, but again, no sign of her, concerns came to light and were heightened after her boyfriend was found dead of an apparent suicide in camden county. in a philadelphia school budget crisis, a state judge is expected to rule this week on the legal flap between the teachers union and the school district. an injunction issued last week stopped the school district from forcing teachers to contribute to their health care benefits. district officials are appealing that decision. this week, the judge will determine if the case can stay in state commonwealth court or be moved to philadelphia common pleas court. today is the second and last day of the head.

the schuylkill regatta. they will last until 4:00 this afternoon. nbc 10 was there for the first day of the races yesterday. the event features rowers from middle school age to masters in their 80s and they hail from 23 states in six countries. keep in mind, even if you're not going to the event, if you're going to be driving in that area, kelly drive will be closed for part of the day. some doctors say don't worry about ebola, focus on the flu. >> far more likely to get the flu this year than they are to get ebola, and actually, far more likely to die from the flu this year than to die of ebola. >> next, how you can protect you and your family from the flu. with the card most accepted in the philadelphia region, you have the power to do more. independence blue cross. live fearless.

this is nbc 10 news. >> while ebola continues to grab headlines across the country, health care workers are worried about a much more common and deadly illness, the flu. doctors say the reality is that the flu could kill tens of thousands of people in the u.s., not ebola. there is a way to protect yourself. nbc national correspondent john yang has the story. >> are you having any pain anywhere, sir? >> reporter: when demetrius walked into the emergency room feeling ill. >> chest pains, i've been throwing up. >> reporter: doctors quickly suspected a virus that's easily spread and is expected to kill thousands of americans in the coming months. not ebola. the flu. >> americans are far more likely to get the flu this year than they are to get ebola. and actually are far more likely to die from the flu this year than to die of ebola.

>> reporter: like ebola, seasonal flu can cause fever, head aches and sometimes even vomiting and diarrhea. but unlike ebola, the flu is highly contagious and is commonly spread by coughing or sneezing. you can't get ebola through the air. in the akron area, two people are quarantined and 39 others monitored because dallas nurse amber vinson, who is now free of the ebola virus, visited the area before falling ill. so far, all have been symptom-free. what's the likelihood that you'll see an ebola case here? >> so we think we are one of the most likely facilities in the country right now to get an ebola case. however, the likelihood is extremely low. >> r >> reporter: it's a virtual certainty that they'll see flu cases this winter. there's a simple step that could help. get a flu shot. >> it's very difficult to stop transmission unless we stop the initial infection in the first place. >> reporter: these children are doing something that fewer than half of all adults do, getting

street. cnbc's tyler matheson has a preview of what we can expect during the week ahead in business news. >> the month of october, a wild one for the stock market comes to an end this week. as the world series wraps up and the new nba season tips off, ghouls and goblins get ready to celebrate halloween. that is on friday. wall street investors are going to be on the lookout for tricks, and some will hope for treats from the federal reserve, as policymakers hold a two-day meeting on interest rates and more, and the winding down of its latest bond-buying stimulus measures. that's in washington, of course. investors will also get the government's first read on gross domestic product, better known as economic growth for the third quarter. most economists predict 4.5% growth for the quarter. that's fast. lots of big earnings reports this week, including the latest from oil giants exxon mobil, chevron, bp, as well as big names like facebook, starbucks, visa, mastercard, and more.
